    Women’s health physiotherapist Description

    Women’s health physiotherapist Birmingham

Consultation with a women’s health physiotherapist. Physiotherapy in urogynaecology can prove enormously helpful with the following conditions:

    • Pelvic pain syndrome
    • Urinary incontinence
    • Fecal incontinence
    • Overactive bladder
    • Vaginal prolapse
    • Prenatal and postnatal physiotherapy
    • Rectus diastasis (separation of abdominal muscles)
    • Caesarean scar treatment
    • Preparation for gynecological procedures
    • Physiotherapy after gynecological procedures
    • Menstrual cramps
    • Painful intercourse

In the course of therapy a number of physiotherapy methods may be used, i.e.:

    • Manual pelvic floor examination (per vaginam or per rectum) – to assess the functioning of the particular muscles of the pelvic area (their tenderness, elasticity, tone) and evaluate the value of pelvic floor strength according to the international PERFECT scale.
    • Breathing re-education – essential for the correct functioning of the abdominal press, diaphragm and, consequently, for the proper work of pelvic floor muscles.
    • Hypopressive exercises – special breathing workout technique used to improve breathing control, decrease or level up the pressure in pelvic cavity, relieve stress on pelvic floor tissues and improve abdominal function after childbirth.
    • Electronic muscle stimulation – technique using an electrical stimulation device which affects the tone of pelvic floor muscles (their tightening or relaxation), helps regeneration and rebuilds reflexes.
    • Myofascial release – physiotherapy technique which rebuilds the pattern system, easing the tension in the pelvic floor area as well as in the whole body. The technique involves internal work per vaginam, per rectum, and work on external body tissues.
    • Kinesiotaping – special tapes applied on the skin to facilitate the therapy process of a given area
    • Patient education – a very important step on the way to full recovery. Teaching each patient how to properly perform everyday activities such as urinating, defecating, lifting weights, standing up, sitting and walking are an essential element to the therapy and its long-term positive effects. They are activities performed on a daily basis and, if done improperly, they can hinder rehabilitation and cause the problems to return.
    • Exercises – an important form of support on the way to full recovery. Individually tailored exercise plan whose aim is to facilitate positive therapy results.
